Sugaring Salon in Chicago: What to Expect and How to Choose

A sugaring salon removes hair with a soft paste made of sugar, water and lemon instead of hot wax. The paste is applied against the direction of hair growth and flicked off in the direction the hair grows, which pulls the hair out at the root. If you’re in Chicago and wondering whether a sugaring studio is worth the switch, this guide covers how it works, what a first appointment looks like, what it costs here, and what to look for before you book.
TL;DR
- Sugaring uses a three-ingredient paste (sugar, water, lemon) and removes hair in the direction it grows.
- A good sugaring studio never rushes you. At Sugar Pop, appointments run 30 to 35 minutes, not a quick in-and-out.
- Our Brazilian is $75 and includes numbing spray and ingrown-hair extractions. We’re non-tipping, so the listed price is the price.
- Skin tone, hair texture and sensitive skin all change how a service should be done, so pick a studio that looks at your skin first.
- Brand-new clients get 50% off their first Brazilian. Ask when you book online.

What a sugaring salon actually does
A sugaring salon (some people say sugaring studio, sugar waxing salon or sugar wax salon, same thing) specializes in one method of hair removal. The paste is made from sugar, water and lemon. It’s applied by hand against hair growth and then removed with the grain, so the hair comes out in the direction it naturally grows. According to Cleveland Clinic, that direction matters: the cooled paste removes fewer extra skin cells than wax, and some people find it less painful.
That’s the technique. The experience comes down to the person doing it. Comfort depends on your own pain tolerance and how experienced the technician is, which is why we spend weeks training each esthetician one-on-one before they ever work on a client alone.
A salon that does mostly sugaring also tends to do it more thoughtfully. The paste, the pace, the way the skin is held and the aftercare are all built around one method, not squeezed in beside five others.

Sugaring vs. waxing: the honest version
You’ll hear a lot of big claims, so here’s where we land.
The real, documented differences: sugar paste is removed in the direction of growth, and it clings less to living skin cells than wax does. Those are the reasons many people with redness, burn or breakage after waxing switch.
The honest caveat: researchers haven’t run many head-to-head studies. Dr. Jen Gunter, writing in the New York Times, points out that clinical data comparing the two methods is limited and that any method that pulls hair from the follicle is a form of trauma to that follicle. So nobody should promise you a pain-free, irritation-free anything.
What we can tell you is what we see in the studio every day. Clients who come to us tired of the burn, the redness and the ingrowns after years of waxing often tell us sugaring feels more manageable, especially when the appointment isn’t rushed and the person doing it knows how to work with their skin. Here’s what’s different at Sugar Pop:
| Typical quick-turn waxing | Sugar Pop sugaring | |
|---|---|---|
| Method | Wax, often with resins, pulled against growth | Sugar, water and lemon paste, flicked off with growth |
| Pace | Short, high-volume appointments | 30 to 35 minutes for a Brazilian |
| Numbing and extractions | Often add-ons | Included with every Brazilian |
| Tipping | Usually expected on top | Non-tipping, listed price is what you pay |
| Who trains the team | Varies | Both owners, hands-on, one-on-one |
If you’ve been getting Brazilian waxes for years, the switch is simple. You book, you show up, and we walk you through each step.
What happens at your first Brazilian sugaring appointment
First-timers are usually the most nervous, and we get it. Here’s the flow, so nothing surprises you.
- Check-in and a quick chat. Your esthetician asks about your skin, any products you use, and your comfort level. Pregnant, on a new medication, or have a sensitive patch? This is when you tell us.
- A look at your skin. We check for irritation, sunburn or anything that means we should adjust or reschedule.
- Numbing spray. Every Brazilian includes complimentary numbing spray.
- The sugaring. We work in small sections, take breathers when you need them, and tell you what’s coming. Nothing is rushed, and there’s no judgment about hair length, body shape or anything else. Come as you are.
- Ingrown-hair extractions. These are included too, so your skin is cleaned up before you leave.
- Aftercare. We tell you what to avoid in the next day or two and when to book again.
Does sugaring hurt?
It’s a Brazilian, so we won’t pretend it’s a massage. But most clients describe it as a quick sting that’s easier than they expected, particularly with numbing spray and an esthetician who isn’t watching the clock. Pain tolerance varies a lot from person to person, and where you are in your cycle can change how sensitive you feel. If you’re nervous, tell us at the start, and we’ll go at your pace.

Is sugaring right for your skin?
Sugaring works for a wide range of people, and a good studio adjusts the service to you. A few situations deserve a little extra thought.
Sensitive skin
Our paste is all-natural: sugar, water and lemon, with no resins. Cleveland Clinic notes that sugaring may cause less irritation than waxing, but that people with eczema or very sensitive skin may want to check with a professional first. That’s exactly why we look at your skin before we start. If your skin is inflamed, infected, sunburned or irritated, we’ll reschedule rather than push through.
Darker skin tones, coarse and curly hair
This one matters to us. People with darker skin tones are more likely to see post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark marks that follow irritation) after sugar waxing, and coarse, curly hair carries a higher risk of ingrown hairs. Both are things a trained esthetician plans around: gentle technique, no repeated passes over the same irritated spot, and proper aftercare.
Our team works with a wide range of skin tones, hair textures and sensitivities, and many clients find us through co-owner Danisha’s TikTok. If you’ve been burned (literally) by a place that didn’t know how to work on melanated skin, you’re welcome here.
Pregnancy
We regularly sugar pregnant clients and adjust the service to their comfort. Let us know when you book, and we’ll talk through positioning and pace. For any medical question about your pregnancy, check with your OB or midwife.
Medications and products
Stop irritating topicals a few days beforehand. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends avoiding retinoid creams for 2 to 5 days before waxing the face, and the same common-sense rule applies to sugaring. Cleveland Clinic also advises waiting at least six months after finishing isotretinoin. Tell us about anything you’re using, and see our pre and post care guide for the full prep list.
Timing: when to book before a trip, wedding or big event
For a vacation, honeymoon or wedding, aim for 2 to 3 days before. That gives any redness time to settle, while your skin is still smooth. Book your first-ever Brazilian a few weeks ahead, not the day before the flight, so you can see how your skin reacts.
For ongoing maintenance, regular sugaring tends to leave hair growing back softer and thinner over time, so many clients space visits further apart as they go. We’ll suggest a schedule that fits your hair growth when you’re in the chair.
Beyond hair removal: skin care that goes with it
A sugaring studio worth returning to cares about what happens to your skin after the hair is gone.
- Vajacials: bikini-area skin care for ingrowns and bumps. Our Pretty Kitty is $63, and the Mini Kitty Add-On is $43 when you’re pairing it with a sugaring service.
- Intimate and body brightening peels: professional treatments for dark spots and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Intimate is $125, Inner Thighs $125, Booty Cheeks $145, and Intimate + Inner Thighs $225.
- Brow shaping: Eyebrow Shaping is $42, and Brow Shaping & Tint is $63.
- Facial sugaring: Upper Lip is $17 and Full Face, Brows Excluded is $56.
- Body sugaring: for anyone of any gender. Full Back is $73 and Chest + Stomach is $74. Brazilians and vajacials aren’t offered for this group.
How to choose a sugaring salon in Chicago
Whether you pick us or someone else, here’s what to check.
Licensing and cleanliness. In Illinois, removing hair for cosmetic purposes counts as cosmetology, so your esthetician should be properly licensed. State sanitary standards also require that client-contact tools are cleaned and disinfected or thrown away after each client, and single-use items discarded after use. You’ll see the difference in how a studio handles its setup. Poor technique or poor hygiene is what leads to irritation and infection, so trust your eyes.
Ingredients. Ask what’s in the paste. Ours is sugar, water and lemon.
Pace. Ask how long a Brazilian takes. Ours is 30 to 35 minutes. Beth, who started Sugar Pop in 2017, has said competitors often try to do the same service in about 15.
What’s included. Are numbing and extractions extra? With us they’re built into every Brazilian.
Tipping. If a studio is non-tipping, the price on the menu should be the price you pay. Ours is.
Who’s behind it. Both of our owners are working estheticians in the studio every day. We’re an independent studio, not a chain, and we know our clients by name.

Location. We’re in the West Loop, an easy walk if you live or stay in Fulton Market, and reachable on the Green Line. Learn more on our West Loop studio page.
Our point of view
Beth started Sugar Pop as a one-room suite in 2017 because we wanted a place where sugaring wasn’t an afterthought on a menu of twenty other things. It’s the whole point of our studio.
We believe a Brazilian shouldn’t be something you dread. That’s why we don’t rush, why numbing spray and extractions are included, and why we take time to look at your skin before we begin. We’re both in the studio every day, training every esthetician ourselves, one-on-one, for weeks. We’d rather our newest team member take longer to be ready than let you feel like a number.
We also care about who gets great service. Every skin tone, hair texture and body deserves an esthetician who knows what to do with it. If you’ve been told your skin is “too difficult” or “too sensitive” for hair removal, come talk to us. And because we don’t do tipping, you’ll know the price before you walk in, and that’s the price you pay.
Come as you are. We’ll take it from there.

FAQ
What is a sugaring salon?
A sugaring salon is a hair-removal studio that uses a paste of sugar, water and lemon instead of traditional wax. The paste is applied against hair growth and removed with it. Some places call themselves a sugaring studio or sugar waxing salon, and the method is the same.
Is sugaring better than waxing?
Many clients find it more comfortable, and the technique does remove fewer extra skin cells than wax. Research directly comparing the two is limited, though, so results depend on your skin and your esthetician. At Sugar Pop, we take 30 to 35 minutes for a Brazilian so we can work carefully.
How often should I get sugared?
Most people book again every few weeks, depending on how fast their hair grows back. Over time, hair may grow back softer and thinner, so some clients stretch their visits out. We’ll suggest a schedule at your appointment.
Can I get sugared while pregnant?
We regularly sugar pregnant clients and adjust the service to your comfort. Tell us when you book so we can plan ahead. For medical questions, check with your OB or midwife.
Do I need to tip at Sugar Pop?
No. We’re a non-tipping salon, so the price you see on our menu is what you pay.
