Hair Removal Without Shaving: Every Option, Compared

You can skip the razor and still get smooth skin. The main non-shaving options are sugaring, waxing, depilatory creams, threading, epilating, laser hair removal and electrolysis. They differ in how long they last, how they treat your skin and how much they cost. If you want results that last weeks, not days, from a method that is gentle on skin, sugaring is the one we recommend. Below is how each option works, what to watch for, and how to choose.
TL;DR
- Besides shaving, the American Academy of Dermatology lists waxing, depilatories, threading, laser hair removal and electrolysis. Sugaring and epilating belong on that list too.
- Sugaring pulls hair from the root like waxing, but with a paste of sugar, water and lemon instead of wax. Results typically last about as long as waxing, up to six weeks.
- Creams work fast but can burn. Laser and electrolysis aim for long-term reduction but need a licensed professional and several visits.
- At Sugar Pop Salon in Chicago’s West Loop, a Brazilian is $75 with numbing spray and ingrown-hair extractions included, and your first Brazilian is 50% off.
- Time your appointment 2 to 3 days before a big event so skin has settled.

What “without shaving” really means
Shaving cuts hair at the skin’s surface. That is why stubble shows up in a day or two. Every other method either dissolves the hair, removes it from the root, or damages the follicle so it grows less.
A PubMed literature review splits methods into two camps. Depilation (shaving and chemical creams) deals with hair at the surface. Epilation (plucking, threading, waxing, sugaring, lasers, IPL and electrolysis) goes after the hair below the surface. The same review notes that all of these are temporary except electrolysis.
So the real question is not just “how do I avoid a razor?” It is: how long do you want to stay smooth, how sensitive is your skin, and how much time and money do you want to spend?
The options side by side
| Method | How it works | How long it lasts | Main watch-outs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sugaring | Sugar paste grips hair and removes it from the root | Up to 6 weeks, with new growth around 3 to 4 weeks | Avoid within six months of isotretinoin |
| Waxing | Wax removes hair from the root | 3 to 6 weeks | Burns, redness, ingrowns if wax is too hot or skin is sensitive |
| Depilatory creams | Chemicals dissolve hair at the surface | Longer than shaving, usually about a week | Chemical burns, irritation, patch test needed |
| Threading | Twisted thread plucks hair at the follicle | 3 to 6 weeks | Hard to do yourself, best for small areas |
| Epilating | A device pulls hairs from the root | Around 3 to 4 weeks | Pain, ingrowns, folliculitis |
| Laser | Light damages the follicle | Months or years, with maintenance | Several visits, skilled provider needed |
| Electrolysis | Current destroys follicles one by one | Permanent, but slow | Takes many sessions over 12 to 18 months |
The lasting-power figures come from Verywell Health’s method guide, Healthline’s sugaring and waxing FAQ and the AAD’s laser FAQ.
Sugaring: the gentle root-removal option
Sugaring is also called sugar waxing, but the paste is nothing like a hard or soft wax. Verywell Health describes it as working the same way as traditional waxing with a water-soluble paste made from sugar, lemon juice or vinegar, and water. Healthline says the sugar, lemon and water paste is better suited to sensitive skin and lasts about as long as waxing.
That is exactly why it answers the “hair removal without wax” search too. You still get root removal and weeks of smooth skin, but the product is a simple, all-natural paste. Ours is three ingredients: sugar, water and lemon.
What clients tell us they notice most:
- Less drama for the skin. The paste is designed to cling to hair, not to the skin around it.
- Smooth, gradual regrowth. Hair that returns after consistent appointments is often finer, though every body is different.
- Fewer reasons to dread the next visit. Not having to tough out a burning strip is a big part of why people stick with it.
If you are used to the sting, redness and ingrowns that come with waxing, switching is easy: book a sugaring appointment instead and bring your questions. You can read more about our Brazilian and bikini sugaring here.
Creams, epilators and threading
Depilatory creams
Creams are the closest thing to shaving without a razor. Verywell Health explains that they contain thioglycolate mixed with sodium hydroxide or calcium hydroxide, which dissolves the hair, and that they stay on for three to 15 minutes depending on the product. WebMD warns that creams can cause chemical burns, hyperpigmentation, ingrown hairs and sun sensitivity, and that hair usually grows back within a week.
If you use one, follow the label for the area and the timing, and do a patch test first. Verywell Health suggests doing it at least 48 hours before a larger application. Never put one on sunburned, broken or freshly shaved skin. That is the kind of burn we hear about from clients who come in after a cream went wrong, and it is a big reason many of them move on to sugaring.
Epilators
An epilator is a device that works similarly to waxing: it removes hair at the root without wax. Healthline suggests exfoliating beforehand, holding the device at a 90-degree angle and moving it in the direction of hair growth. Medical News Today lists folliculitis, scarring, pain, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and ingrown hairs among possible side effects. Results last roughly three to four weeks.
Threading
Threading uses a twisted cotton thread to lift hairs out at the follicle. Verywell Health notes that it is quick, precise and usually inexpensive, but hard to do on yourself and can leave skin red. It suits the face and brows well. It is not practical for legs, backs or a bikini line.
Laser and electrolysis: the longer game
If you want to cut down hair for good, these are the two routes. They are medical-style treatments, so they take planning.
Laser hair removal uses light that melanin in the hair absorbs, which damages the follicle. The AAD says most people need 2 to 6 treatments spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, and that results can last months or even years, with maintenance sessions sometimes needed. The AAD also advises choosing a board-certified dermatologist, because lasers in inexperienced hands can cause burns, scars and lasting changes in skin color.
Electrolysis uses electrical current at each follicle. Women’s Health reports that it is the only FDA-approved method for permanent hair removal and works on all hair colors and skin tones. The tradeoff is time: Verywell Health says it can take 12 to 18 months to reach your goal. In the US, electrologists are licensed by state, per UCSF.
Both need a real commitment of time and budget. Plenty of our clients sugar in the meantime, then decide later whether they want to go further.

Why we think sugaring is the best fit for most people
Sugaring gives you the root-removal result of waxing, a short list of ingredients, and a routine you can start this week with no device to buy, no chemicals to time and no months of sessions.
It also fits more bodies than people expect. Our team works with a wide range of skin tones, hair textures and sensitive-skin needs. Coarse or curly hair that tends to ingrow is exactly where careful technique and extractions matter. The Skin of Color Society, as cited by Medical News Today, notes that plucking, threading, waxing and shaving can lead to pseudofolliculitis barbae, which is more common in people of color. That is why every Brazilian at our studio includes ingrown-hair extractions, and why we look at your skin before we start.
Our perspective
We started Sugar Pop Salon in 2017 as a one-room suite, and the idea has not changed: hair removal should feel like care, not punishment.
Most people who find us are not looking for a lecture about methods. They are tired of redness, burn and ingrowns, and they want someone to say, honestly, “there is a gentler way.” For us that way is sugaring. It is the core of what we do, and it is why we are a sugaring-focused studio and not a place that does a little of everything.
Two things shape every appointment. First, both owners are working estheticians who are in the studio every day, and we train each esthetician one-on-one for weeks before they see a client. Second, we do not rush. We take 30 to 35 minutes for a service others try to finish in about 15, because sugaring done well takes attention.
We also keep pricing simple. We are non-tipping, so the price you see is the price you pay, and numbing spray and ingrown-hair extractions come with every Brazilian. Come as you are. We have seen it all, and we are not judging.

What a sugaring appointment feels like at our studio
First appointments are the part people worry about most, so here is how it goes.
- We talk first. We check in about your skin, any products you use and how comfortable you want to be.
- We look at your skin. If something looks irritated or sunburned, we adjust the plan.
- Numbing spray. It is complimentary with every Brazilian.
- Sugaring, unhurried. We work in small sections and give you breathers as needed.
- Extractions and aftercare. We take care of ingrown hairs and tell you how to treat your skin for the next day or two.
Will it be totally painless? No hair removal that pulls from the root is. But clients who come from waxing often tell us the difference in how the skin feels afterward is big. If you want to know what to do beforehand and afterward, our pre and post care guide covers it.
Timing, prep and aftercare basics
Timing for events. For a wedding, honeymoon or beach trip, we suggest booking 2 to 3 days before so any pinkness has settled. If it is your first time, try a visit a few weeks ahead so you know how your skin reacts.
Grow-out between visits. For waxing, the AAD advises hair about 1/4 to 3/4 inch long. Our estheticians will tell you what length works for sugaring when you book.
After your appointment. The AAD’s waxing aftercare tips apply nicely here: cold packs for comfort, skip hot baths and showers for a bit, wear loose clothing and use an oil-free or non-comedogenic moisturizer. If redness or swelling lasts more than two days, see a dermatologist.
Sensitive skin. If your skin reacts to nearly everything, general advice on caring for sensitive skin can help you build a calmer routine around your appointments.
When to hold off
The AAD says people who have taken isotretinoin in the last six months should not wax, and Verywell Health says the same window applies to sugaring. Waxing should also be avoided when using antibiotics or topical tretinoid, per the AAD as cited by Verywell Health. If any of that is you, check with your dermatologist or prescriber before you book. Skip sunburned skin, too, and tell us if you are pregnant or have a skin condition so we can plan around it.

Bumps, ingrowns and dark spots
If irritation is what pushed you away from your razor, a bikini-area skin treatment can help. Our vajacial, the Pretty Kitty at $63, is designed for bumps and ingrowns, and the Mini Kitty add-on is $43 with a service. For dark spots and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, we offer professional intimate and body brightening peels, starting at $125.

FAQ
Is there a way to remove hair without shaving or waxing?
Yes. Sugaring uses a paste of sugar, water and lemon rather than wax. Other options include depilatory creams, threading, epilators, laser hair removal and electrolysis. Sugaring is the one that gives you root removal and weeks of smoothness without a device or chemicals.
How long does hair removal without shaving last?
It depends on the method. Healthline says sugaring lasts up to six weeks, with new growth around three to four weeks. Verywell Health puts waxing and threading at three to six weeks. Creams last only about a week, according to WebMD, and laser can keep hair away for months or years.
Does sugaring hurt?
You will feel the hair leave the root, but most clients find it manageable. At our studio, Brazilians include numbing spray, and we work at a calm pace with breathers whenever you need them. Tell us if you are nervous and we will adjust.
Is permanent hair removal possible?
Electrolysis is the only FDA-approved method for permanent hair removal, according to Women’s Health. Laser is approved for permanent hair reduction, per UCSF, and the AAD says it can keep hair away for months or years. Both take multiple sessions with a trained, licensed provider.
Can I sugar if my skin is sensitive?
Often yes. Healthline notes that sugar paste is more suited to sensitive skin than wax. We look at your skin before we start and can tailor the appointment. If you take isotretinoin or have taken it in the last six months, talk to your prescriber first.
